Non?exchangeable stable hydrogen isotope ratios in clay minerals and soil clay fractions: A method test
نویسندگان
چکیده
Stable hydrogen isotope ratios (?2H values) in structural hydroxyl groups of pedogenic clay minerals are inherited from the surrounding water at time their formation. Only non-exchangeable H preserves environmental forensic and paleoclimate information (?2Hn value). To measure ?2Hn values soil fractions, we adapted a steam equilibration method by accounting for high hygroscopicity. Our USGS57 biotite (?95.3 ± SD 0.9‰) USGS58 muscovite (30.7 1.4‰) differed slightly but significantly reported ?2H (?91.5 2.4‰ ?28.4 1.6‰), because contained 1.1%–4.4% exchangeable H. The low replicate measurements (n = 3) confirmed precision. separation including destruction Fe oxides, carbonates organic matter, dispersion did not change five different minerals. However, were unable to remove all matter fractions resulting an estimated bias 1‰ two samples 15‰ carbon-richest sample. results demonstrate that can be reliably measured without interference atmospheric used separate fraction. Highlights We tested determine stable clay. Gas-tight capsule sealing Ar atmosphere was necessary avoid remoistening. showed accuracy

Clay Minerals and Catalysis
More than half a century ago, Irish physicist John Desmond Bernal and Swiss geochemist Victor M. Goldschmidt independently proposed that clay minerals may have played an important role in prebiotic synthesis (Bernal 1949; Goldschmidt 1952). I concur that mineral catalysis must have had a central role in prebiotic synthesis because most uncatalyzed reactions start from simple precursors like hyd...
متن کاملClay Minerals: Adsorbophysical Properties
The structure and features of surfaces of clay minerals (kaolin, montmorillonite, etc) have an important scientific and practical value. On the surface the interrelation of processes at electronic, atomic and molecular levels is realized. Availability of mineral surface to external influences opens wide scientific and technical opportunities of use of the surface phenomena, so the research of c...

The Clay Minerals Society (CMS) Nomenclature Committee was asked by CMS Council to produce a glossary of clay science in 2003. The Committee developed several constraints on the development of the glossary: (1) it was decided to produce a glossary of clay terms, based on clay science. Terms may have other meanings in other disciplines, but the Committee did not want to include how other discipl...
متن کاملClay Minerals as Natural Nanosheets
Particles with nanometer dimensions (nanoparticles) are all around us. The finest particles of sand are blown by the wind over thousands of kilometers. The finest particles of soils are either eroded by the wind in extremely dry conditions or by water under wet conditions and deposited hundreds of kilometers or more from the origin. The air contains nanoparticles of carbon, ice, and oxides and ...
